Sunstone is an enchanting plagioclase feldspar mineral, primarily composed of sodium and calcium. Its most distinctive feature is its aventurescence, a phenomenon where light reflects off microscopic inclusions of mica within the stone, creating a shimmering effect reminiscent of sunlight glinting off water. This optical phenomenon is what sets Sunstone apart from other gemstones, making it highly sought after in jewelry and carvings. Sunstone can be found in several locations worldwide, with notable deposits in Oregon, USA, Tanzania, Norway, India, and Austrailia.
Sunstone is named after its resemblence to our sun, and its alternative name, Heliolite. The Greek word “helios” means sun and “lithos” means stone. It was first used in the 18th century and is believed to be inspired by the ancient belief that the sun was a god that bestowed light and life upon the Earth. In ancient cultures, Sunstone was thought to possess metaphysical properties, often associated with healing and joy.
Sunstone forms in igneous rocks through a process involving the crystallization of molten magma. As the magma cools, various minerals crystallize, and certain conditions allow for the formation of the characteristic inclusions (usually copper or hematite) that create the shimmering effect.
